Launched as the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 - the Daytona name was developed in the media to commemorate the Ferrari 1-2-3 finish in the 1967 Daytona 24 Hour race. A successful model for Ferrari - 1284 were made between 1968 and 1973 in Coupe format with a further 122 Spider models were produced from 1971 and 1973.
This legendary front engined V12 GT initially came with fixed headlights behind plexiglass although US legislation forced the introduction of pop-up lights in 1971. The 352 BHP V12 powered the GT roadcar to 174 mph and the success of the model in GT racing fuelled the legend associated with the Daytona. A number of coupes have been converted by the aftermarket into spiders - the factory spiders having reached very high values.
