Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 History, Specifications and Spares | GTO Classic Ferrari Parts
330 GT 2+2
The 330 GT 2+2 made its first public appearance at the Brussels Motor Show in late January 1964 having been first unveiled to the press a couple of weeks earlier at the pre-season competition department press conference. It replaced the 250 GTE 2+2, which had ended in 1963 with a series of one hundred models named the 330 America: visually identical to the 250 GTE, but fitted with a 4-litre engine.
The Series II 330 GT 2+2 elegant lines were the work of Pininfarina. This second series differed from the first predominantly in the front-end treatment; the first series (1963-1965) having four headlights and the second (1965-1967) having the two. At the same time, the Borrani wire wheels gave way to ten-hole cast alloy wheels, still with the knock-off Rudge hubs, although the wire wheels remained available as an option and were opted on this car.
The engine is a SOHC per bank 4-litre 12-cylinder unit, engine tipo 209/66, with a total capacity of 3967cc. It has an outside ‘V’ spark plug arrangement, fitted with a bank of three twin choke Weber 40 DFI carburettors, a twin coil and a rear of engine-mounted distributor ignition system producing 300 bhp. The engine is based on the original Colombo ’short’ block design but was slightly longer with increased bore centres to provide adequate waterways with the larger diameter cylinder bores.
The engine Tipo was differentiated from the earlier Tipo 209 due to the number of mounting points: 209 had four, while 209/66 had two. The engine is coupled to a 5-speed, all synchromesh gearbox and a final drive through a propeller shaft to a rigid rear axle. Whereas, early Series I cars had a 4-speed gearbox with an electronically operated overdrive.
More and more, 330 examples are now being seen in our workshops for full or partial restoration, either mechanical or cosmetic. In addition, GTO Engineering look after and maintain several 330 GT 2+2's, storing them for clients in our secure facility near our main workshop.
